Heart’s Hidden Holidays – City escapes!

Using the map below, check out some out-of-the-ordinary suggestions Heart listeners have shared for how they discovered the best city adventure.

"A lot of things of interest are along Promenade des Anglais, where pastel-painted buildings overlook the Mediterranean. Take in the narrow streets of Le Vieux Nice (the Old Town) with its atmospheric restaurants and boutiques."

"Catch the train that runs along the coast and visit Villefranche, a picturesque village with lovely places to eat. Go star spotting with all the mansions on Cap Ferrat on the near by peninsula, then watch the sun go down over the bay."

"When you visit Nice take a coach trip to Eze Village. It is up in the mountains and no cars are allowed to enter. There are lots of small artisan shops and restaurants for you to explore."

"Combine touring the city with a visit to the Douro Valley, about an hour and a half outside of the city and a place of great wines."

"Walk down Cais de Ribeira, overlooking the Douro, until you reach the tiny, tucked away Gomos de Saudade. Lunch with the locals in this simple little restaurant enjoying fresh seafood and local specialities."

"Take the train along the Douro valley to Pinhao. The scenery is stunning along the way and there are lovely local places to eat, and port cake to experience!"

"Take a walk to the top of the Leaning Tower for a surreal experience and a breathtaking view. Stroll through the Basilica for the most amazing artwork displayed in a place of worship, then walk around the Baptistery for astounding acoustics."

"Hire a car and head out of Pisa, to the Tuscan mountain to a vineyard (Casa al Vento recommended) for cheese and wine tasting and relaxation!"

"Make sure to visit the lovely leaning tower of Pisa by moonlight. It is magical."

"The Dorsoduro district is a hidden gem, full of pretty canals, squares and churches but is quieter than the main tourist areas. It is a good place to wander and see the gondola makers and mask makers, find small restaurants and hotels and soak up the true feel of Venice."

"Take advantage of Vienna's generous public transport system with one of their travel passes for 24, 48 or 72 hours! It's really easy to use the trams, subway trains and buses and a great way of getting round the city, day and night."

"The Third Man Museum is THE place to go for film fans and all those interested in the post-war history of Vienna. Original exhibits and documents are on display in this quirky museum with heart and soul."
