Using the map below, check out some out-of-the-ordinary suggestions Heart listeners have shared for how they discovered those special places which capture the imagination.
"Walk to the far side of the river at night in the summer and climb the hills that look over the city with the lights stretching out below you. There are orange trees that smelled so sweet – the aroma will stay with me until I am an old lady."
"Want to escape the crowded tourist city centre then go to the little know gem location of Ostia Antica, the great harbour city of ancient Rome. All the Roman archaeology and culture you need without the heat, noise and crowds."
"We discovered a fab Italian deli in Trastevere Rome called Panetteria Romana. They sold delicious arrancini and slices of fresh pizza which you could take away or eat inside at a table or the counter. Very friendly."
"Supersense - hidden behind a cafe in Vienna leads to a hipster cabinet of curiosities that includes an operational letterpress, massive analogue photos, hand-cut vinyl records, a recording studio, and a large collection of scents."
"Visit the Third Man Museum - it's the place to go for film fans and all those interested in the post-war history of Vienna. Containing 13 rooms, there are 2,300 original exhibits and documents on display in this quirky museum with heart and soul."
"There's a secret little hideaway (wine tavern) in Vienna's 8th District called Weinstube Josefstadt that has lovely wines and delicious food. It's in a little garden tucked away and very quiet! A real treasure!"
"If visiting Rhodes, take the city tour bus or a taxi and head up on foot to Monte Smith Hill to see the forgotten gem that is the ancient Olympic Stadium and Acropolis. Well worth the short trip, a highlight of Rhodes for those who like their history, and best of all entrance is currently free!"
"Ixia - worth checking out Prassonissi at the tip of the island where the Aegean meets the Med. The wind means it always feels cool, and there are acres of sand to run about on. The restaurants are pricey here so if you stop for a meal go to Lardos village."
"Try island hopping from Rhodes - Rhodes-Symi-(Nisyros)-Kos-Kalymnos-Leros-Lipsi-Patmos. A cocktail on every island!"
"Hop on the ferry to the equally beautiful island of Gozo to experience amazing beaches, stunning architecture and historical ruins. We also found the most amazing restaurant called Patricks Lounge, steaks were heavenly. Gozo is a holiday gem!"
"If you travel to Malta don't miss the old city of Mdina; it's so easy to get to by bus and very reasonable. It's a medieval city with stone walls, beautiful churches and architecture also some of the best restaurants in Malta."
"Visit the Tarragon Restaurant in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. The food is truly world class, the wine list is extensive and the location is beautiful. The restaurant overlooks St. Paul's Bay and the Med - recommended if you are searching for a romantic meal."
